Upbeat Prabhu Deva confident on 'Villu'

Prabhu Deva is directing Vijay for the film 'Villu' and the dance master-turned actor-turned director is more than confident about the movie's prospects at the box office. When asked if 'Villu' will be as successful as 'Pokiri', the director said he hopes it will be three times more vibrant than 'Pokiri'.

When asked about big names such as Vadivelu and Nayantara in the film, Prabhu Deva said, 'When Vijay was confirmed for the project, one of my assistants literally begged me to cast Nayantara in the film. His desire seems to be working wonderfully well and the film is shaping up very well'.

'The film would start off in a pleasant way in a picturesque habitat and jovial manner with family, friends and lorry loads of fun. A gory incident takes place and the action begins. Vijay would be awesome in these scenes. Songs and fights have come out impressively and I am very happy with things'.

Talking about Nayantara in the film, Prabhu Deva gives a sneak peek of her introduction scene. 'When you are running for cover after it starts raining and then you find a beautiful girl with an umbrella standing in the rain inviting you the share the umbrella with her, how would you feel?' asks the director.

Well, Nayantara might just have to dance in the rain once again after 'Kuselan'.

When asked about Prabhu Deva's Hindi remake of 'Pokiri' featuring Salman Khan, the expert dancer turned director says, 'it has been about seven years since Salman had acted in an action packed film. He has performed extremely well and the movie is sure to be exciting'.

It is interesting to note that Prabhu Deva is directing Vijay for 'Villu' while his elder brother Raju Sundaram is directing Ajith in 'Aegan'.

So who are the real competitors? Vijay and Ajith or Prabhu Deva and Raju Sundaram? We'll know soon.

Ash to meet Rajini in US?

Rajinikanth, a few days ago, disclosed that he would be flying down to the US to take part in Robot's shooting. But the superstar said that he was not aware if Aishwarya Rai would be available for shooting. Meanwhile, rumors are abuzz in Kollywood that the former Miss World, who is on a world tour and currently camping in the US, will be a part of the filming process. Will director Shankar put an end to this guessing game and spell out if Ash would be involved in Robot's shooting in the US?

Some facts about Marmayogi

After the success of his Dasavathaaram, Kamal Haasan has already started work on his next project titled Marmayogi, which is set against the backdrop of the seventh century BC. The latest news is this movie will have a whopping budget of Rs. 150 crores!

A cutting-edge digital camera – RED ONE Digital Cinema, which can shoot Ultra High Definition 4K images that have five times the resolution of all previous HD cameras – would be used for shooting Marmayogi. Since the camera's daily rent is around Rs. 30,000, the producer plans to purchase a new camera instead of taking it on hire.

Kamal is planning to use the footage from his dream project Maruthanayagam that was started way back; about thirty minutes of the film was canned at a cost running into crores and then, the project went into hibernation. Now Kamal wants to ensure that at least some amount spent for Maruthanayagam can be used for Marmayogi.

Sources say that Hema Malini, who played a brief role in Kamal's Hey Raam, has been roped in to play a negative role in Marmayogi. If this news is true, it will be her first negative role in an illustrious career spanning over three decades.

Ajith to play dual roles in remake of 'Race'

Ashok Amritraj, is not only a successful Hollywood producer but has also made his presence felt in the Tamil film industry with 'Jeans'. He is currently interested in remaking the Hindi film 'Race' with Ajith Kumar in the lead.

The Hindi original had two brothers played by Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Khanna double-crossing each other which eventually leads to their downfall. Ajith was so impressed with the storyline that he immediately gave the approval to cast him. Not only that, he also evinced interest to perform both the roles.

It can be recalled that Ajith played the roles of brothers in 'Valee' which went on to be the start of the dynamic career that he is having. The other film that he did dual roles (again brothers) was in 'Villain' directed by K. S. Ravikumar. Ajith bagged awards for both 'Valee' directed by S. J. Suryah and 'Villain'.

Is the Tamil remake of 'Race', which is about racing (another passion of Ajith), going to get him similar kind of accolades? Let's wait and see.

The film will commence once Ajith's 'Aegan' is released.

Dhaam Dhoom paves way for Sathyam

Late director Jeeva’s Dhaam Dhoom is ready to hit the screens soon. In fact, Kollywood was abuzz with news that it would see the light of the day on August 15th. But sources now say that the release has been postponed for a couple of weeks. When probed into the reason behind this, we found that Vishal’s Sathyam is touted to be released on August 15th and the Dhaam Dhoom team does not want their film sharing the same platform with it. Those who have seen the film already say that Dhaam Dhoom has come out very well. Even the film’s trailer bears testimony to this fact. It may be recalled that Jeeva succumbed to a massive heart attack while shooting Dhaam Dhoom in Russia. The film was later completed by his wife Aneez, associate Manikandan and guru P.C. Sreeram.

It was a blockbuster opening weekend for Superstar Rajinikanth in the United States of America. 'Kuselan' continues to march on with the same speed as it opened on August 1 and has been sold out in all major locations in the second week too.

Superstar clarified his stand on the recent 'apology'

A press meet was held in the morning of 2nd August and superstar Rajinikanth clarified his stand on the recent 'apology' he had made to the Kannada media.

'I am happy where I stand today. My speech during the protest meeting over the Hogennakkal issue was directed only to the people who indulged in violence and not to Kannadigas in general' said Rajinikanth.

Speaking at a function organized to distribute financial aid to the technicians who worked for his latest film 'Kuselan', Rajinikanth said, 'Now I say that I have learnt my lesson'.

It may be recalled that Rajini's reported apology to Kannadigas evoked protests from a section of Tamil film personalities.

Earlier, speaking at the function, director Balachander said, 'I discovered Rajinikanth and know him very well as a man of principles and integrity. He had only expressed his regret and did not apologize. Put an end to this once and for all and let us not be party to a fight within Tamil cinema'. He also appealed to everyone to stay united.

Balachander comes in rescue of Rajini!

An event to honor the technicians of Kuselan financially, as promised by Rajini during the movie’s audio launch, was held today at the Raghavendra Kalyana Mandapam. A total of Rs. 40 lakhs was distributed among the technicians, of which the superstar contributed Rs. 20 lakhs and the producers, the rest.Addressing the occasion, Rajini announced that the financial assistance would continue in his future movies as well. He said that this has been discussed with Shankar, with whom he is working next, and his daughter Soundarya.

He also explained his stand in the apology issue and stated that the whole issue was a lesson for him. “Had I mentioned that my remarks on the Kannadigas do not apply for people in Karnataka in general and only to the miscreants, this issue wouldn’t have cropped up,” Rajini clarified.

K. Balachander, who also attended, spoke in the event and remarked that the issue was blown out of proportion unnecessarily. “I have been watching the issue for some time now and did not comment on it since I did not want to add fuel to the fire. In my opinion, Rajini did not apologize and has only expressed regret over the issue,” KB added. He also mentioned that since Rajini’s life is closely intertwined with the producers and people, it became necessary for him to issue such a statement. “Apologizing and expressing regret are two different things. I would appeal to friends of Tamil cinema not to build a dividing wall inside the community by raising such issues. Let the bygones be bygones,” he stated.

KB added that at a time when Tamil talent is being receiving nationwide recognition, especially in Bollywood, it is essential that Tamil cinema maintains its unity.

Nayan sizzles in Kuselan!

Whoever saw the movie Kuselan at the special screening held last evening has come away raving about it. Kuselan is very different from the usual Rajni masala entertainer, in that Rajni comes for only about 60 minutes or around 3 reels.

Nayantara, who is the superstar’s jodi, has sizzled on the screen, giving one of her best performances to date. In her meteoric rise to fame as the highest-paid South Indian actress so far, Nayantara’s first movie that Tamil moviegoers remember her by is Chandramukhi where she was Rajni’s love interest. After that, there has been no looking back for the starry-eyed Malayalee beauty. And now again, she is back with the Superstar in Kuselan. In the many publicity stills of Kuselan that we have all seen so far, Nayantara exudes a sensuality and confidence that most heroines are still struggling to perfect. She has been the perfect foil for the superstar without fading into the background.

Watch out for Nayan in the ‘Saaral Oh Saaral’ song. There will be plenty of whistles and catcalls in theatres during that song!

Kuselan Review

Starring: Rajini, Pasupathy, Nayanthara, Meena, Sona, Vadivelu, Vijayakumar

Direction: P Vasu

Music: G V Prakash

Production: K Balachander
Director P. Vasu’s take on Srinivasan’s Kathaparyumbol attempts to show Rajini in a different light, only with a different screen name. Forty minutes into the movie, Rajini appears, bringing with him the glitz and glamour of movie making. He delivers punch dialogues, duets with Nayanthara, and shows that he can still pull in a crowd by playing himself without having to hype up his image. However, in the process, and probably due to the overwhelming presence of the superstar, the delightful story about two friends is regrettably lost.
Kuselan follows the story of Balu, played by Pasupathy, who is more often than not addressed cynically as Barber Balu by his village men. He is down in the dumps because his business is going downhill and is in an attempt to revive it from slumping by applying for a bank loan. His short term goal, however, is to buy a new wooden chair and get rid of his dilapidating old one.

In the mean time, there is hullabaloo in the village owing to a shooting unit that has camped in the neighborhood. Balu gets to know that his childhood friend Ashok Kumar is part of the cast. When the news about Balu’s friendship with Ashok Kumar is let out by his wife Sridevi, played by Meena, the reluctant Balu is burdened with requests from many sections of the village. They want to use Balu’s friendship as a ticket to get near Ashok Kumar for reasons ranging from meeting him in close proximity to inviting him for the village school’s silver jubilee anniversary.

The first forty minutes of the movie, intended to be down-to-earth and unpretentious village comedy, is a classic case of Lost in Translation. Vadivelu’s earsplitting comic act, especially dialogue delivery, steals away the possibility to have a few laughs at the

naivety displayed by Pasupathy. Besides, lack of sharp-witted dialogues also contributes to the tedium. Although Vadivelu’s hiding-and-watching-wife’s-exercising-with-villagers is in bad taste, his shaving-the-balloon act while apprenticing with Pasupathy is hilarious. That apart, Livingston, Santhanam, Manobala, and R. Sundarrajan also contribute to the laughs.Although Rajini remains the main focus of the movie, Pasupathy wells many eyes with tears often. His inability to express his family about his unwillingness to visit Ashok Kumar, his helplessness when he could not pay his daughter’s school fees, and his emotional turmoil when encountered by his friend’s speech – Pasupathy proves to be the saving grace of the movie at times. Meena, as his unassuming wife, has done an okay job despite having been decked up with brand new saris and costumes as a poor man’s wife.

Nayan plays herself and is oozing with oomph, courtesy, her barely-there costumes. If that’s not enough, she’s also drenched in the rain and caught in different angles for a song that appears like a bolt out of the blue – it also seems to be the case for most of the songs. But who cares, as long as Nayan is there. The focus of the movie quite often shifts to Vadivelu and Livingston who tickle a few funny bones with their unsuccessful attempts to meet Rajini
G. V. Prakash’s music and rerecording flows with the tide. The art department seems to be screaming for attention for all the sets look plastic and non-natural.

On the whole, Kuselan is a friendship tale worth giving a shot. For it is not too often that you get to see Rajini playing himself, the superstar. Not to say, the fifteen minute climax which is the only high point of the movie.
